Which film does My Wrap™ use?

My Wrap™ installs Bodaq architectural film exclusively, a brand of Hyundai L&C. It is not decorative vinyl sold by the roll at a hardware store. It is a commercial-quality surfacing film, designed to renovate indoor surfaces that get used every day.

A film built to last. Bodaq is used in hotels, restaurants, shops, elevators and on commercial doors. If the film holds up in those places, it holds up in a family kitchen.

Air-channel adhesive. The film's adhesive backing has tiny channels that let air escape during installation. The result is no bubbles and a smooth surface from edge to edge.

A film that stretches. The film stretches with heat to wrap around edges, corners and curved surfaces. That is what gives a finish with no visible seam on the door edges.

How do wrapping, painting and full replacement compare?

These are the three most common ways to refresh a kitchen in Québec. Here is how they compare on average.

Painting looks inexpensive, but on average it costs more than a wrap, needs several days of drying and often leaves brush marks. It is also limited to solid colours.

Full replacement is still the right choice in two specific cases. You want to change your kitchen layout, or your cabinet boxes are too damaged to keep. In every other case, wrapping gives a result that looks comparable for 5 to 10 times less.

Can my cabinets be wrapped?

Before thinking about colours, two things need to be checked.

Your doors must be flat. The film is applied to doors with a flat surface. Shaker doors, with their raised frame, and moulded doors are not suited to wrapping. If your doors have that style, we build custom flat doors at competitive prices and wrap them. Contact us to discuss it.

Your cabinet boxes must be in good condition. Wrapping changes the look, it does not repair a structure. A box swollen from water, a cracked door or a panel coming apart has to be dealt with first. We check all of this during the visit and tell you plainly.

The good news is that most kitchens in the Québec City area meet both conditions. Many have solid boxes, in wood or quality MDF, with a finish that is simply dated. Worn melamine, 90s oak or yellowed doors are exactly the kitchens that wrapping transforms best.

Which surfaces can be wrapped?

Wrapping is not limited to cabinet doors. The same technique works on almost any flat surface in the home.

How does a wrap project work, step by step?

A project has four steps, from the first contact to the finished kitchen.

1. You contact us through the quote form or at 1 888-441-WRAP (9727). We confirm your address and your door type.
2. We come to your home. We measure your cabinets, check the condition of the boxes and show you the samples. The visit is free with no commitment.
3. You receive a detailed quote. It lists the surfaces to cover and the price. Once signed, that price is firm.
4. We install the wrap in one day. The team arrives in the morning and hands back a finished kitchen in the evening.

What happens on installation day?

Installation happens at your home, in about 8 hours for a residential kitchen. Here is what happens during the day.

Surface preparation. We clean and degrease every surface. This is the most important step, because film applied to a greasy surface eventually lifts. A kitchen builds up years of cooking grease, especially around the stove and range hood.

Applying the film. The film is applied with a squeegee, then heated with hot air to wrap around edges and corners. The corners are then sealed so the edges hold over time.

Final adjustments. We adjust the hinges so the doors close straight.

That same evening, your kitchen is usable. There is just one rule for the following 72 hours. The adhesive is still curing, so avoid washing the surfaces, putting heavy objects on wrapped countertops and exposing the cabinets to steam or strong heat. A light adhesive smell may linger the first day, and it fades by airing out the room.

How long does a cabinet wrap last?

When well maintained, a wrap lasts 7 to 10 years or more. The architectural film carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty on surface durability.

Lifespan depends mostly on use and care. Lower cabinets, near the sink and dishwasher, see more moisture than upper ones. Doors near the stove get more heat. By following a few simple habits, described below, the film keeps its look for years.

And if a section gets damaged in an accident, it can be replaced without redoing the whole kitchen. That is one of the big advantages of wrapping over painting or replacement.

What does a wrap resist?

Architectural vinyl is designed for heavy indoor use, in homes and in businesses.

Everyday scratches. It handles normal rubbing, but not a blade. Always cut on a board.

Heat up to 80 °C. That is enough for a normal kitchen, but a pot straight off the burner or a dish from the oven goes past that limit. On a wrapped countertop, always use a trivet.

Normal kitchen and bathroom humidity. The film does not like standing water, so wipe up puddles around the sink.

Mild household cleaners. Warm water and mild soap are almost always enough. Abrasive products and solvents should be avoided.

Is wrapping safe and eco-friendly?

How do you care for wrapped cabinets?

For daily cleaning, a damp microfibre cloth, warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap are enough. Rinse, then dry. On wood finishes, wipe with the grain without pressing hard.

For stains, wipe up coffee, wine, tomato sauce or turmeric right away. For a stubborn mark, isopropyl alcohol diluted half and half with water, dabbed on, handles most cases.

Never use scouring pads, steel wool, magic erasers, acetone, paint thinner, undiluted bleach or a steam cleaner.

Against heat and steam, keep the toaster, kettle and coffee maker away from cabinet doors. Turn on the range hood when cooking. And at the end of a dishwasher cycle, let the steam escape for a few minutes before fully opening the door.

If an edge lifts, do not glue it back yourself. Call us. During the first year, it is covered by the installation warranty.

What are the limits of wrapping?

Wrapping is not the right solution for every kitchen. Here is what it does not do.

It does not work on Shaker or moulded doors. Only on flat doors. For other styles, custom flat doors are possible.

It does not change the kitchen layout. Moving the sink, adding cabinets or opening a wall require renovation work.

It does not repair damaged structure. A box that is swollen from water or broken has to be fixed first.

It does not resist direct heat or blades. A trivet and a cutting board remain a must on a wrapped countertop.
